During the Autumn Term, Mr Geary was talking to his Y7 students about the weather and said that most of the students in the class would not have had the experience of the kind of winters and prolonged snow that he remembered when he was young; he even remembers the big freeze of 1963, apparently.
But that has all changed and it really has been a case of "be careful what you wish for" because the snow started to fall in earnest on the last day of term and we have been in the grip of the longest cold spell for almost a generation. As we all know the snow and the cold weather has brought with it both good and bad experiences but, as one commentator said, generally it brings out the seven year old in all of us. School and York have looked beautiful in the blanket of snow and students have really enjoyed being able to throw snowballs, and away from school build snowmen and go sledging.
It has been difficult and a hardship for many but the snow has brought a beauty to the landscape. Now, as the snows melt it will become another memory and a lasting one for many of our students. It will be the Big Freeze of 2010, when it snowed like it used to do, when Cano closed for a snow day and there was still snow on the ground well into January.
