Rewards and Consequences

The school aims to promote high standards of behaviour, self discipline and learning, through positive encouragement and reward. Refer to page 14 for the rewards scheme ladder and page 16 for the system itself.

If you fail to meet the required high standards of behaviour, or disobey the code of conduct you will be punished.

  • A comment will be written in your planner.
  • You will also be kept in a detention.
  • You might be placed on report with your form tutor, year learning co-ordinator or a member of Senior Management.
  • On report, you will be given specific targets to meet and will be punished if you do not achieve them.
  • You may be kept in detention after school for up to 15 minutes without notice.
Detention for up to one hour may be imposed. The school has the right to detain you, provided that you parents are given 24 hours notice. Notification will be via your planner or by a letter.
  • You might be placed "on report". Each teacher will write a comment after each lesson. Your report will be checked by your Year Learning Co-ordinator at the end of every day and then sent home for your parents to see and sign.
  • You may be isolated. This means that you have to work on your own. Apart from visits to the toilet and to have your lunch, you may have to work through breaks, and will lose all privileges.
  • In serious cases you may be excluded from school for a period. You would only return after you and your parents visit the school to discuss the matter with the Head, Deputy, Assistant Heads or Governors and have agreed to a Code of Conduct or to other conditions.
  • As a last resort students may be excluded permanently from school and the reasons notified to Governors and the Local Education Authority.

Reward Scheme

The reward scheme that commenced last year will continue to operate. Each student will have a planner with an appropriate planner page to house stickers. These will allow for a total of 200 over the year.

Each sticker is colour-coded to represent every curriculum subject. In addition there are some special awards for citizenship and other headings under which stickers can be awarded, for example prefects and library stickers.

Stickers are awarded in the main by subject teachers to reflect one of four main categories:

1. Achieving a high standard of work.
2. Excellent or improved attitude or behaviour for each subject.
3. Improved attitude or behaviour for each subject.
4. Being a good citizen.

When various levels are reached, letters are sent home to reflect this and certificates awarded at the 25, 50, 75 and 100 stage. If any student should gain 150 or more stickers over the course of the academic year a Headteacher's prize will be awarded. At the end of every term there will be a prize draw in which students can participate. A draw ticket is awarded as a result of gaining 23, 30, 40, etc. stickers up to a maximum of 4 per term. Students then have a chance to win some big prizes. This proved a great success last year.

If a student receives 6, 15 or 30 stickers in a particular subject over the course of the academic year, a letter is also sent home for that subject at each of those 3 levels.

The system should, we hope, continue to be a resounding success. We always encourage parents to support us in making the system work. Thank you.
