English ![]() Where the enjoyment of literature, creativity of ideas and development of skills produces learners for life!
Over a period of years, the English Faculty has established an excellent reputation, setting high standards in examination results – with the vast majority of our students attaining three levels of progress or better by the end of Key Stage 4. We have been part of national pilots such as Functional Skills, Assessing Pupils’ Progress and are at the forefront of GCSE developments with an AQA subject advisor and senior examiner in the faculty.
Key Stage 3 Learning is individualised using Assessing Pupils’ Progress, and the curriculum is designed for secure progress. Activities are interactive and encourage both group and independent learning and include:
Students are also encouraged to enjoy and experience a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction texts by different authors, historical and contemporary.
Key Stage 4 All students study AQA GCSE English Language and English Literature. It is modular format, involving a balance of controlled assessments and external examinations across Years 10 and 11. Booster sessions, revision classes and master classes are offered for all students, promoting Ds into Cs and As into A*s! Functional Skills We are proud of our 100% pass rate in English Functional Skills. This national qualification demonstrates students’ ability to transfer their skills into real world situations.
Broadening Horizons A wide variety of extra-curricular clubs and events run throughout the year. These include: theatre trips and workshops; creative writing competitions and novel writing clubs; Readathon, author visits, master classes and much more. Students Work Miss Englemann is proud to share two poems from her students.
