English

Where the enjoyment of literature, creativity of ideas and development of skills produces learners for life!

Over a period of years, the English Faculty has established an excellent reputation, setting high standards in examination results – with the vast majority of our students attaining three levels of progress or better by the end of Key Stage 4.  We have been part of national pilots such as Functional Skills, Assessing Pupils’ Progress and are at the forefront of GCSE developments with an AQA subject advisor and senior examiner in the faculty.

Key Stage 3

Learning is individualised using Assessing Pupils’ Progress, and the curriculum is designed for secure progress. Activities are interactive and encourage both group and independent learning and include:

 Guided reading and writing

 Card sorts

 Mini whiteboards

 Text modelling and annotation

 Speaking and listening activities

Video editing in the Mac suite

 Podcasting and radio production

Students are also encouraged to enjoy and experience a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction texts by different authors, historical and contemporary.

Key Stage 4

All students study AQA GCSE English Language and English Literature. It is modular format, involving a balance of controlled assessments and external examinations across Years 10 and 11. Booster sessions, revision classes and master classes are offered for all students, promoting Ds into Cs and As into A*s!

Functional Skills

We are proud of our 100% pass rate in English Functional Skills. This national qualification demonstrates students’ ability to transfer their skills into real world situations.

Broadening Horizons

A wide variety of extra-curricular clubs and events run throughout the year. These include: theatre trips and workshops; creative writing competitions and novel writing clubs; Readathon, author visits, master classes and much more.

 The Inner Opposite

Lost In The Forest

When you feel uneasy

And a little bit queasy

You are not sick

Neither are you thick

But you are possessed

And the Inner Opposite has received enough Zest

To go on a quest

He’s trying to get out

But don’t just wait and pout

Because I, the narrator, can help you out.

If you are fat, he is slim

You like ice-cream

You can make him scream.

It hates you

And you hate it

Let’s overcome it

Bit…by….bit

By Jack Pickford 7SW

 Lost in the forest

I broke off a dark twig and lifted its whisper to my thirsty lips.

Maybe it was the voice of the rain crying.

Something from far off

It seemed deep and secret to me

Hidden by the earth

A shout muffled by huge autumns

By the moist, half-opened ground

The darkness of the leaves

Wakening from the dreaming forest there

The sprig sang under my tongue

Its drifting fragrance climbed through my mind.

As if suddenly

The roots I had left behind cried out to me

The land I had lost with my childhood.

I stopped.

Wounded by the wandering scent…
