Languages

Welcome to the Faculty of Modern Foreign Languages.

We are a large and well resourced faculty who are committed to providing a range of language learning opportunities for all pupils. We have a languages for all policy, which we strongly believe enhances social skills and leads to greater confidence. We believe that learning a modern foreign language should be stimulating and fun and ultimately should result in a sense of achievement for all students.
The Faculty is currently staffed by five full time teachers and one part time teacher. There are five teaching rooms, of which four have interactive whiteboards as well as tv, video and dvd facilities. One classroom has 10 computers where our students enjoy a variety of MFL programmes.

Key Stage 3

Year 7 students currently learn French and German for two hours each per week. In Year 8 and 9 students have three teaching hours per week of MFL where French and German is divided equally. Students follow the Heinemann Expo textbooks for French and the Echo Express textbooks for German, which are both in line with the National Curriculum and the Framework Objectives for Languages.

Key Stage 4

Students are given the option to choose their preferred language for GCSE and uptake is above average. We follow the Edexcel board with the coursework option. Students can begin Spanish GCSE in Year 10.

Trips and Visits

These are an integral part of our programme, since cultural awareness is one of the requirements in the National Curriculum. At present, we offer a Year 9 and 10 French Exchange to Vernon in France in partnership with Joseph Rowntree's School. We offer a Year 9 trip to the Rhineland in Germany and have recently introduced a Year 8 trip to Paris. In the past we have run a Year 10 trip to the Costa Blanca in Spain. Students attend the annual GCSE conferences and we attend the Leeds Christmas Market every December.
