Welcome to the Department of Modern Foreign Languages.
We are a large and well resourced department who are committed to providing a range of language learning opportunities for all pupils. We have a languages for all policy, which we strongly believe leads to enhanced social skills and greater confidence. We believe that learning a modern foreign language should be stimulating and fun and ultimately should result in a sense of achievement for all students.
The Department is currently staffed by six full time teachers and one part time teacher. There are six teaching rooms, of which four have interactive whiteboards as well as TV, video and DVD facilities. One classroom has 12 computers where our students enjoy a variety of MFL programmes.
KS3
Year 7 students currently learn French and German for two hours each per week. In Year 8 and 9 students have three teaching hours per week of MFL where French and German is divided equally. Students follow the Heinemann Expo textbooks for French and the Oxford Klasse textbooks for German, which are both in line with the National Framework Objectives for Languages.
KS4
Students are given the option to choose their preferred language for GCSE. We follow the Edexcel board with the coursework option. Students can begin Spanish GCSE in Year 10 and follow the modular AQA board.
Trips and Visits
These are an integral part of our programme, since cultural awareness is one of the requirements in the National Curriculum. At present, we offer a Year 9 and 10 French Exchange to Vernon in France in partnership with joseph Rowntree’s School. We offer a Year 9 trip to the Rhineland in Germany and have recently introduced a Year 10 trip to the Costa Blanca in Spain.
