Leisure & Tourism Students in Year 10 and 11 follow the OCR Leisure and Tourism course leading to a Single Award GCSE. The course is an excellent way for the students to gain an insight into one of the fastest growing industries on the planet. The single award is made up of two mandatory units:
Understanding the Leisure and Tourism Industries
This which looks at a wide range of issues including; different types of leisure and tourism facilities; reasons why people travel; employment opportunities, visitor attraction and activities, both in the UK and internationally; health and safety laws and the importance of sustainability of the industry globally. This unit is externally assessed. Moving Forward in Leisure and Tourism Which allows the students to carry out in depth, independent research into a particular leisure facility identifying reasons why tourist visit the organisation; how the organisation operates as a business; up-to-date business systems; marketing and promotional techniques. Students will also consider the impact of tourism on the local community and environment, including eco-tourism. This unit is internally assessed and externally moderated. GCSE Leisure and tourism encourages our students to be inspired and moved by the sheer breadth and depth of the leisure and tourism industries, it allows students to gain an insight into related sectors such as business, retail and distribution, and hospitality and catering. The course also allows our students to develop as effective and independent learners and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds. Finally, our students gain an understanding of the contribution that leisure and tourism makes to society and the economy.
