The Leisure and Tourism industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the World. We live at a time when people are constantly looking for new ways in which to spend their leisure time and enjoy new and exciting holidays. Not too long ago a man paid £11 million to become a ‘Space Tourist’. Whether it's a days shopping in Scarborough, shopping at Meadow Hall or lying on a beach on a Greek island the Leisure and Tourism Industry is involved. 

What is GCSE Leisure and Tourism?

GCSE Leisure and Tourism is a nationally recognised vocational qualification designed to provide students with a background to the industry and a choice of roots into further education and employment. 

What do I get? 

GCSE Leisure and Tourism is a double award, so it is a qualification equal to two GCSEs. The grades will be awarded from A* to G depending on how well you have done in each of the three units.

The Structure of the CourseUnit 1: Investigating Leisure and Tourism 

In this unit students will develop an understanding of what is meant by leisure and how the leisure industry has grown over the last thirty years. Students will investigate all aspects of the Leisure and Tourist Industry. Students will study the inter-relationship between Leisure and Tourism: looking at the impact of tourism on the environment; eco tourism and the concept of sustainable tourism. Unit 1 is assessed by an external examination.

Unit 2: Marketing in Leisure and Tourism 

In this unit, students will look at what is meant by marketing; what is meant by a marketing mix; market research and product development. Students will use the theory that they learn to investigate the marketing policies and techniques used by the Jorvik Viking Centre-producing a portfolio of coursework which will include a SWOT analysis of the museum. 

Unit 3: Customer Service in Leisure and Tourism

 After looking at all aspects of Customer service students will investigate and analyse the Customer Service provision at the National Railway Museum. Units 2 & 3 are assessed through coursework portfolios. 

What skills will be developed? 

As well as covering aspects of the Leisure and Tourism Industry, students will also develop Key Skills in the following areas:

  • Problem solving
  • Working with others
  • Collecting and analysing information
  • Independent learning
