The department aims to provide support for learning for all pupils who have been identified as having a need which might otherwise mean they are at a disadvantage to other pupils when accessing the National Curriculum.
Special Needs staff liaise with staff from feeder primary schools to gain knowledge about year 6 pupils before they become our new intake so that initial programmes can be put in place for pupils at the beginning of year 7.
All year 7 pupils will undergo a reading and spelling assessment shortly after joining Canon Lee. Members of staff in the department will contact the parents of pupils who are identified for extra support. Specific programmes will then be set in place.
Wherever possible, we aim to support pupils in normal lessons but recognise that some pupils will need to be withdrawn for short periods to take part in specific support programmes.
A particular success has been our " Transition Group ". This is a small group (14) of targeted pupils who attend the SEN department for all their academic lessons. This helps us to concentrate resources on the pupils who most need academic support. It runs throughout Year 7, after which pupils will be taught in setted groups.
SEN department staff provide expertise in the education of pupils learning difficulties, emotional and behavioural difficulties, dyslexia, physical, hearing and medical difficulties and English as an additional language.
Pupils are encouraged to visit the SEN department to explain their problems and to look at possible support strategies.
The SEN department provides expertise and information for all subject staff.
Pupils are regularly rewarded for effort and good work.
Pupils are encouraged to develop newly learned skills at home.
Pupil progress is regularly monitored and resources are allocated in years 8, 9, 10 and 11 to support targeted pupils.
Close contact is maintained with support agencies to ensure support is available to the school where this is required.
